"Haiku to Vilnius" - new way to express yourself

2008-08-16 16:31:00

Initiated by Public Institution "Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009", project "Haiku to Vilnius" invites everybody to write poems dedicated to Vilnius.

We invite everybody to create a haiku poem dedicated to Vilnius. Awards for best three-line poems will include special prizes and publicity through outdoor advertising, newspapers, television, radio, and special billboards. From now on public areas of Vilnius will be directly open to poetry.

The Project is aimed at disclosing a creative potential of the city and developing a strong and culture-centred community able by its creative initiatives to widespread a message about Vilnius as a capital of open and public-spirited culture.

Haiku is a most brief unrhymed Japanese poetic form consisting of seventeen syllables arranged in three lines, recording the essence of a moment keenly perceived. Various sources feature similar definition, if put briefly. But no reference book can explain a mysterious evolution of haiku into an international form of poetry, which is still Japanese by its origins although not conforming to the traditional syllable count. Perhaps not a one poet felt discouraged by strict rules of traditional verse, and lost his inspiration while counting syllables. But "Haiku to Vilnius" is different. If usually haiku is about nature, we appreciate haikus about everything - starting public transport, finishing with your feelings in autumn.

Express your feelings to Vilnius right now by writing a haiku.
